The correct Three Card Poker strategy is a single threshold: raise with Queen 6 4 or better, fold anything worse. Played this way, the Ante and Play wager carries a house edge of 3.37% per unit of Ante, and the Pair Plus side bet costs between 2.32% and 11.62% depending on the paytable. The chart comes first; the derivation and the paytable comparison follow.
Rule assumptions
| Rule | Setting |
|---|---|
| Deck | Single 52 card deck, reshuffled every hand |
| Dealer qualifies | Queen high or better |
| Play bet | Equal to the Ante |
| Dealer does not qualify | Ante pays 1:1, Play pushes |
| Ante Bonus | Straight 1:1, three of a kind 4:1, straight flush 5:1, paid when the player raises, regardless of the dealer's hand |
| Hand ranking | Straight flush, three of a kind, straight, flush, pair, high card |
All figures are exact, computed by complete enumeration of every player hand against every dealer hand from the remaining 49 cards. Last verified: 29 September 2026.
The chart
| Player hand | Action |
|---|---|
| Pair or better | Raise |
| Ace high or King high | Raise |
| Queen 6 4 or better (e.g. Q 7 2, Q 6 5) | Raise |
| Queen 6 3 or worse | Fold |
| Jack high or worse | Fold |
Compare the highest card first, then the second, then the third. Q 7 2 raises because 7 beats 6 in the second position; the third card never enters the decision.
Why the threshold sits at Queen 6 4
Folding loses the Ante, so its value is fixed at minus 1 unit. Raising commits a second unit and has value only if it loses less than 1 unit on average.
| Hand (no pair, no flush) | EV of raising | EV of folding | Decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| Q 6 5 | minus 0.987 | minus 1.000 | Raise |
| Q 6 4 | minus 0.994 | minus 1.000 | Raise |
| Q 6 3 | minus 1.003 | minus 1.000 | Fold |
| Q 3 2 | minus 1.067 | minus 1.000 | Fold |
| K 3 2 | minus 0.552 | minus 1.000 | Raise |
The boundary is narrow: Queen 6 4 beats folding by 0.006 units, and Queen 6 3 loses to it by 0.003. King high is a comfortable raise because a Queen high dealer qualifies but loses to it.
The logic is the dealer's qualifying rule. When the dealer fails to qualify, the Ante wins even if the player's hand is weak. A marginal Queen high raise collects that Ante on every non qualifying dealer hand, which is what lifts it above folding.
Residual edge under correct play
| Strategy | House edge per Ante |
|---|---|
| Queen 6 4 rule | 3.37% |
| Raise with any Queen high or better | 3.45% |
| Raise every hand | 7.65% |
Under the Queen 6 4 rule the player raises on 67.42% of hands, so the average total wagered is 1.674 units per round. Measured against total money wagered, the edge is 2.01%. Either figure describes the same game; quoting 2.01% without saying so makes the game look cheaper than it is per Ante.
Perfect play still leaves a 3.37% house edge per Ante. No decision available to the player reaches break even.
Pair Plus: the paytable is the whole story
Pair Plus is a side bet on the player's own three cards. There is no decision and no strategy; the dealer's hand is irrelevant. The house edge is set entirely by the paytable, and UK tables do not all use the same one.
| Pair, flush, straight, trips, straight flush | House edge |
|---|---|
| 1, 4, 6, 30, 40 | 2.32% |
| 1, 4, 6, 25, 40 | 3.49% |
| 1, 4, 5, 30, 40 | 5.57% |
| 1, 3, 6, 30, 40 | 7.28% |
| 1, 3, 5, 30, 35 | 11.62% |
The flush payout carries the most weight because flushes are the second most common paying hand, at 4.96% of deals against 16.94% for a pair. Cutting the flush from 4:1 to 3:1 adds almost 5 percentage points to the edge on its own. The paytable is printed on the layout or in the game's help screen and is the only figure that needs checking before a Pair Plus bet.
Common strategy mistakes
- Raising every hand. A common deviation. It more than doubles the edge, from 3.37% to 7.65%, by committing a second unit on hands such as Jack high that lose it far more often than not.
- Mimicking the dealer. Raising on any Queen high, the dealer's qualifying threshold, looks logical and costs 0.08% relative to the correct rule, entirely on Queen high hands below Queen 6 4.
- Comparing Pair Plus edges across paytables as if equal. A 1, 3, 6, 30, 40 table carries more than three times the edge of a 1, 4, 6, 30, 40 table on an identical bet.
